Rana Tahir is a poet and author. She is a Kundiman Fellow and a member of RAWI (Radius of Arab American Writers). Pulled Roots
First,
the absolute truth: there are the trees
uprooted and supplanted.
Prunus serrulata, cherry blossoms,
yearn for the hills in Fukushima,
to hear sakura no hana in the clean wind.
There are hurricanes,
traveling over land to find
their long lost
marshes, the quiet temperament
to help lessen their storm. Flash floods
have been known to happen
along the muddy valleys and mountain sides—
the steepest of slopes.
There is always
the need for something
that is your own.
Be careful of their conspiring.
You may be brought down.
