Zoo
After “Aquarium” by Audrey Dubois
The creatures sleep still like plastic,
like mass produced pink suburbanalia,
more flamboyant than flamboyance,
you think, it’s a gift for them to be
reveling in Christmas light spectacles
with you–you, and your compassion
for animals, your love of nature, moral
compass, beeswax chapstick, gloves
made in Taiwan, Adidas sweatshirt
under Canada Goose, hot chocolate
cup tossed in a recycling bin only to be
mixed back with trash by the town,
and the gift shop sloth-themed tarot
deck you thumb through tells you:
you will soon live someplace warm.
