eggshells

there is no nest made too soft
when you consider how brittle the egg

an entire world swimming below the bloom
threadbare as a summer sheet

the reason mother birds are such careful carpenters
why we parallel pregnancy and nesting

is just this: the world is overfilled with sharp edges
        and bereft of soft landings
