Choosing You Again
I watch a silent film about divorce and am forced
to imagine the pleas the children are making.
Outside, you water potted sunflowers with all
the puddles that split our grip on various walks.
You’ve denied this sort of confessional before.
Earlier, outside the bank, we ran into a con man
who claimed we’d be rich if we just focused on
the unhappiness of three other couples.
But even that con man had tattered shoes
and soon he too will be shaving without a mirror
right outside a marbled bathroom, somewhere
in the near future, as we remember this day
and all the birds chirp encouragement at
the strong, stubborn lovers still hanging on.
