Building a World
The skin of his temple: how delicate,
this lodestar, this thin membrane. Not in a
frail way but a feeling one. The gentle
basin of his throat, a carved arc. Each day
we pare down, together, to the lean meat
of intangibles. Then paint the backdrop.
Bluegums are obsidian husks against
bougainvillea sky, dip-dyed carefully
with fascia—tangerine, lapis, fuchsia.
We wake early. Time is a gift, not an
edge to chase. Turns out: it’s nice to feel nice.
I’m doing some things differently lately,
like writing poetry when I’m happy.
